To recognize doctoral thesis in research in astrophysics, and encourages effective written and oral presentation of research results. Qualifications: Applicants must be doctoral students at any university in the United States or abroad who have passed their thesis defense for the PhD any time during the two calendar years prior to the year of the APS April Meeting where the award is made (for example, for the before 6 years award, anyone who defended in before 8 years is eligible), and whose thesis topic is appropriate for DAP (i.e., dealing with topics that are typically presented in DAP sponsored or co-sponsored sessions at the APS April Meeting), and who are members of the DAP are eligible for the award; individual must meet APS's standards for professional and ethical conduct; should generally be nominated as an individual, though primary members of teams or collaborations may be considered, especially those that involve more than one institution; should not be nominated for funding or recognition they have already received from APS and should only be nominated for new work and for funding and recognition opportunities they have not previously won, unless the individual has significantly extended the previously-recognized work or achievements such that further recognition is appropriate; additionally, when nominating someone, applicants should consider the accomplishments of women, racial and ethnic identities in the sciences and scientists outside the United States; APS does not consider nominations of deceased individuals. Selection criteria: Selection will be based on committee criteria and APS Council of Representatives. How to apply: Applicants must submit online nomination form; nomination packet consists of the following materials: a CV, including a list of publications; a letter from the thesis advisor citing the specific contributions of the nominee and the significance of those contributions; at most two letters seconding the nomination; a letter from the department chair certifying the date of the thesis defense. If this letter goes beyond verifying the defense date, it must be counted as one of the two seconding letters; a manuscript prepared by the nominee describing the thesis research; the manuscript may not exceed 1,500 words (excluding references) and a maximum of 6 figures; should include: nominee’s name, institution, and contact information; date the nominee passed their dissertation or thesis defense, for dissertation and thesis awards; suggested citation, beginning with the word "For" and consisting of less than 300 characters and that does not include the nominee's name, gendered pronouns or symbols; nomination letter that evaluates the qualifications of the nominee and identifies the specific work or achievement to be recognized; at least two, but no more than four, letters of support that evaluate the qualifications of the nominee and that identifies the specific work or achievement to be recognized; nominee’s CV or biosketch; a list of the nominee’s most important publications.
