To honor a graduate student whose work best exemplifies the passion for coastal science and engineering that marked the career. Qualifications: Applicants must be a student pursuing (or recently having received) a graduate degree at a California university or college; study must deal with a coastal problem occurring in the marine environment (e.g. beaches, the nearshore zone, ports/harbors, coastal rivers and bluffs, lagoons, and wetlands) preferably in the State of California; search for a solution to the problem should be a primary study goal; preference will be given to students who undertake field work with the intent of discovering the true nature of the problem while experiencing a wide range of ocean conditions; work must identify the importance of the research and the inter-related nature of the scientific/engineering findings with the social, economic, and environmental issues so common to coastal issues; research must demonstrate a high level of scholarship in which the applicant clearly states the importance of the work and cites relevant studies that have been conducted previously; Graduating high school seniors; Current college students (undergraduate or graduate); Adult re-entry students; Students with financial needs (includes middle-income families); Students attending four-year universities, community colleges or career/technical schools; Commitment to your education; Potential for success in college; Minimum GPA of 2.0p; Participation in community service, extracurricular activities and/or work experience; Current residence in San Diego County. Selection criteria: Selection will be based on committee and activities, academics, financial need and personal statements. How to apply: Applicants must be submit online application form; concise description of the study that includes final results or research findings to date (5 pages maximum); A concise, annotated bibliography that demonstrates knowledge of pertinent research by others (3 pages maximum); A statement of support from an academic advisor or educational mentor; A personal statement that includes pertinent background information as well as the applicant's reason for selecting this area of study.
